Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), West Singhbhum is the first KVK under the jurisdiction of Birsa Agricultural University, Ranchi in Jharkhand established at Jagannathpur in the year 1986. KVK is managed by Birsa Agricultural University, Ranchi and funded by Indian Council of Agriculturtal Research, ICAR New Delhi. KVK is a grass root level technology transfer and vocational training institution designed for bridging the gap between the available technologies and its application for increased production for the farming community.

It is located at Jagannathpur 46 Km. away from district head quarters, Chaibasa, 110 Km from Jamshedpur and 205 Km from state capital Ranchi on Chaibasa Noamundi road. There are eighteen blocks in this district namely Sonua, Gudri, Bandhgaon, Chakradharpur, Khuntpani, Goelkera, Anandpur, Manoharpur, Noamundi, Tonto, Hat Gamharia, Chaibasa, Tantnagar, Manjhari, Jhinkpani, Jagannathpur, Kumardungi and Manjhgaon.

The KVK promotes as well as co-ordinates the agricultural and allied activities for the farming communities, with a view to bring development among the underprivileged section in a systematic, self generating and sustainable manner.

The KVK conducts training for Practicing Farmers, Rural Youths and Extension Functionaries. It also conducts Frontline Demonstrations on cereals, oilseeds, pulses, vegetables, farm implements, nutritional garden, livestock and Adaptive Trials both at KVK farm and in farmer’s field. It also organizes / promotes other extension activities like field days, agricultural exhibitions, flower shows, farmers fair, women in agricultural day, ex-trainees meet, farmer’s meet, diagnostic services, advisory / enquiry services, video / film shows, animal health services, vaccination camps, radio talks, farmers organizations like farmers clubs, Self Help Groups for women farmers & others are also supported and monitored by KVK.

In order to conduct the various trainings, demonstrations, On Farm Trials (OFT) and other extension activities KVK functions in close collaboration with Govt. agencies, Line Departments, Training and Research Institutes / Stations, NABARD, Banks, Public Sector Agencies and NGO's. Apart from West Singhbhum district Vocational Trainings are imparted to the farmers and rural youths of neighboring districts as well. All the activities of the KVK are designed based on mandates prescribed by ICAR for the functioning of KVKs.

Mandate

Conducting 'On Farm Testing' for identifying technologies in terms of location specific sustainable land use system.

Organize frontline demonstrations on various crops to generate production data and feedback information.

Organize short and long term vocational training course in agriculture and allied vocations for the farmers & rural youths with emphasis on 'learning by doing' for higher production on farms and generating self employment.

Organize training to update the extension personnel with emerging advances in agricultural research on regular basis.

2. Nursery development practices, Plant multiplication techniques for vegetables & fruits.
3. Seed production of cereals, pulses & oilseeds and promotion of seed production of important crops through seed villages.
4. Organic manure based INM for improving crop yield as well as soil fertility.
5. Management technologies for dairy, poultry, piggery, goatry and introduction of improved breed of goats, pigs, backyard poultry & ducks.
6. Up gradation of local goats, pigs and poultry birds for increasing productivity.
7. Propagation of mushroom technology and cultivation.
8. Integrated disease and pest management in different crops and vegetables.
9. Development of nutritional garden in homestead land.
10. Entrepreneurship development and subsidiary income generation.
